FDA: Vitamins Are Drugs

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

B6 is a vitamin that all humans need to survive. It occurs both naturally and can be synthetically created.

The Food and Drug Administration ruled recently that Pyridoxamine, a natural form of B6, could no longer be sold commercially. It has been formally yanked off the market. The reason being that a pharmaceutical company, BioStratum, petitioned to have the exclusive right to sell it in a drug.  The success of this case, despite its potential nutritional repercussions to the public, seems now to be becoming a trend. The Liberty Crier reports:

"Unfortunately, this isn’t all the bad news about vitamin B6. All forms of B-6, natural or synthetic, must be converted to P5P, another natural form, for the body to use it. Another drug company, Medicure Pharma, wants sole use of P5P and so has petitioned the FDA to ban its use as a supplement as well." (read more)

What do you think about this trend? Where do you draw the line between natural products and drugs?  How do you feel about the government limiting access to vitamins and minerals and regulating them as drugs?

If you don't like it, consider signing the following petition. We did.

ANH-USA: Tell the FDAthat You Oppose the Drug Company Petition to Ban P5P, the Natural and Bio-available For of Vitamin B6!
